How to Kill Yellow Jackets

You have planted a beautiful garden and then had it infested with yellow jackets. You'll be trying in vain to enjoy your garden as you battle the swarm of yellow jackets. Here are some tips on how to kill yellow jackets if they have become a nuisance.

Step 1Observe the yellow jacket nest. Yellow jackets act in patterns. You want to attack them when they are primarily in the nest. For most yellow jackets, this occurs around dusk when they return "home" for the evening.
Step 2Dress appropriately for fending off the yellow jackets. This means covering as much of your body as possible. Wear long pants, long shirt, gloves and boots. If possible, dig out a pair of ski goggles and face mask that you use during the winter. Finally finish your high fashion look with a hat that covers your ears. At this point, you are pretty well protected.
Step 3Read the directions on the insecticide bottle. They will all vary slightly in nature. Generally, you will approach the yellow jacket nest and stick the nozzle of the insecticide inside the hole. But it is important to read the directions beforehand. The last thing you want is to be negotiating a bunch of swarming yellow jackets as you try to read the fine print.
Step 4Stick the insecticide inside the nest and spray. Once you enact the insecticide, it will kill the yellow jackets in the nest very quickly. Be careful for rogue yellow jackets that try to fly out of the nest.
Step 5Watch the nest the next day to see if there is any additional activity. You may need to repeat the process if there are still yellow jackets that you need to kill.
Step 6Take down the nest. Now that you have killed the yellow jackets, knock down the nest with a broom. Remember to stay fully clothed and wear gloves just in case there are still a couple of yellow jackets that made it through the "big one."
